Sweater for Grandma

I have a 91 year old grandmother and would like to knit a very soft sweater for her. I was wondering if the WOTA alpaca is very soft. -OR- Does anyone have any suggestions. I don’t want to spend more than $100 for the sweater.

I’m still to new to know much about yarn types yet, but I do have some WOTA and IMO it’s a little too scratch for a sweater. Elderly people sometimes have sensitive skin, too. Since you are willing to spend up to $100 I’m sure someone will have a good choice for you.

yes, it’s not soft at all for a sweater. I 'd use something else.

WOTA is Wool of the Andes and is not soft. I would only use it for felting.

But, KnitPicks also makes several alpaca & blended yarns that ARE EXTREMELY soft!! Ive used Elegance…its YUMMY! I think Andean Treasure is a worsted weight…also delicious. Julie stands by the bulky-wt Decadence. I felt-up Hildie’s Merino Style sweater. Its VERY nice, as well. None are machine washable.

I will tell you I am knitting a scarf with Decadance and it is soooooo Dreamy to knit with! very very soft!

Yeah I looked at some alpaca the other day and cost comparison… it’s not too bad I don’t think

Let us know what you choose…

I can attest that Andean Treasure, Andean Silk, and Decadence are soooooo soft. I would knit my grandmother a sweater from any of those…it would have to be hand washed though, keep that in mind.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to go with Elegance or Decadance. Both of them have a lovely blue.

Go Grandma!! :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

My MOM is 91–just turned that Nov. 29th!! She still maintains a small home, drives ,works HARD HARD crossword puzzles, READS like a maniac, attends LOADS of meetings, goes to church every Sunday, and goes to look AFTER people when they’re sick!! I’m SO lucky!! (I WUV you , Mommy!!)

How wonderful that you have mom’s and grandma’s that age. I lost my grandparents when they were in their late 60s. My mom is 54 so I hope we still have the next 40 years together. She is very active herself, and I think she always will be.

Hugs and blessings to those nonagenarians out there…and also to those trying to follow in your footsteps. :cheering:
