Sweater for granddaughters

I am making identical sweaters for my 3 granddaughters and I can’t figure out this part of the pattern. I have been knitting for years and this has me stumped. It’s probably simple, but I can’t wrap my mind around it. Thank you.

You’re going to work each shoulder alternately, with a separate ball of yarn.
Next Row (RS): K23. Stop and add another ball of yarn. Using the new ball, bind off the center 14 stitches and knit to the end of the row.
Then you’ll work across the WS of the right shoulder with the new ball, drop the yarn, pick up the yarn from the first ball to work the left shoulder, bind off 2 stitches and work across.
RS: Knit across left shoulder, drop yarn. Pick up the other yarn, bind off 2 and knit to the end of the row.
Repeat the last 2 rows once.
Then you’ll do the same thing except binding off only one stitch at the neck edge, to get to 17 sts/side. After that you’ll work even until it’s the same length as your back.

The pattern is suggesting that you work the two shoulder pieces “at the same time”, which is not really at the same time, but knitting one (or two) rows of one, then doing the same on the other, going back and forth between the sides. Some knitters find this a good way to do it.

However, you don’t have to do it this way. You can knit one shoulder piece all the way to the top, then go back and knit the other.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Thank you so much! I don’t think I could have done it without your directions.

ColoCro and kushami have described the directions correctly. There’s no third ball of yarn or 7sts.

There is more than one way to do this. I wrote it out as close as I could to what the directions were calling for. There are as many ways to knit things as there are people knitting them.

You could also work the first 23 stitches, then continue with the same yarn and bind off the 14 stitches and work the whole right shoulder, bind it off and reattach the yarn to finish the left shoulder. No need for a 2nd ball, and certainly no need for a 3rd.

I think you need to read it again. Where do you see either 13 stitches, or 3 to bind off? There are 4 rows of binding off 2 on alternate rows, and then 4 rows of binding off 1. The back is already finished, you’re supposed to match the length of the front shoulders to the back. I don’t see anywhere to bind off 7 at the end…there should be 17 on each shoulder.

Well I’m not a novice and your instructions do not make sense.

I’ve made 3 sweaters that used this method. It may not make sense to you, but it does work.

My reply was not to you, but to the person calling for 3 balls of yarn .
