I have just finished knitting the body of a sweater and am working on the turtleneck when I realized that, even though I made a swatch and calculated the guage, the body is too large (widthwise) by over two inches. Short of taking the whole thing apart, is there anything I can do to remedy this problem? I thought about sewing the seams with a backstitch and having large seams on the inside, but I’m not sure that’s the best solution. Any ideas? I’m making this sweater for my daughter’s holiday present and don’t really have the time to redo the whole thing. Thanks!!
Did you knit the sweater with the same needle you knitted your swatch? could it be that you continued your sweater with the needle you did your rib stitch on? if not it’s quite possible that your tension changed after you did your swatch. A way to verify this is to examine your swatch and your knitted garment at the same time and try to see if one is knitted tighter or looser than the other.
This happens to me when I knit mittens/socks in 2 different sittings. One is tighter than the other and it all depends on the mood i’m in. its probably a good idea to knit both mittens in one mood (??)but I have a busy life therefore, mood swings are inevitable.
If there’s no ribbing at the bottom of the sweater, adding ribbing will help to pull it in. It won’t make the sweater smaller, but it will help make it look like it fits better.
I’ve never seamed a sweater body to make it smaller, though, so all I can suggest is to eat some donuts:teehee:
