I have attached my sleeves to the bodice and have the correct # of stitches for size medium so now attempting first decrease row (row 3 of lace pattern) it says to work the pattern as a set until 2 sts before marker I do not have a complete whole repeat for this I end on K2tog then the 2 sts before the marker are next which I am to K2 tog sm the P1 (the repeat is an 8 st repeat K1,k2tog,yo,k3,yo,ssk) I also understand about omitting the yo in the last repeat … I have attempted this many times and I do not know what I am doing wrong any help would be greatly appreciated
Surry hills decreases
Here’s a tutorial that might help (scroll down to the section on lace).
In terms of your pattern, you have two pairs of “increase/decrease” in your repeat.
You have a k2tog paired with a YO, then you have a YO paired with an SSK. (Note that they are paired in terms of adding one/decreasing one, not paired as in being next to each other. They may not be.)
You have to execute or not execute these pairs in pairs.
So you never omit a YO without also omitting its partner decrease.
Either work both halves of the pair, or neither.
To omit a YO, don’t work it. To omit a K2tog or SSK, just knit the stitches normally instead (i.e. knit 2).
This means the very edge of your lace will have some plain stockinette bits in it. If you look closely at finished projects, you will see this. It can’t be avoided and looks fine, I promise!
If you find this too mind-bending, there is a simpler option. As soon as you have an incomplete number of stitches at the edge (i.e. less than 8), work those leftover stitches in stockinette. This will give a bit more plain stockinette at the edge of your lace. It also looks fine.
(You can see these two options illustrated in the article I linked to in the yellow lace sample. The second option looks a bit blah in their sample because it is so small. On a garment knitted in 8ply it should be fine.)
Hope this helps.
Hi there thank you for responding I’ve tried this numerous times and all the info I’ve found on this pattern my stitch count doesn’t match up with what they say I should have so I will try again noting the last repeat won’t have 8 sts as they say the first row of decreases should’ve have.
How exactly does the stitch count not match up?
Please give us all the details: what the pattern says to do, what stitch count it says you should have before and after the first row of decreases, and what goes wrong when you do it.
Hello
The joining of the sleeves to the bodice includes places where a marker is removed and a new marker placed 1 stitch later. Have you checked you did this? I’m just wondering if you have the correct number of stitches for the row but one stitch out on the 8 before the marker (you have 4 instead of 5 after the yo), could this be due to accidentally missing out the marker move?
I notice in the pattern some are PM and one is pm, and they come a stitch earlier than the marker already on the work, then work one stitch and remove the old marker.
This might not be the problem of course. I just thought, maybe…
No I checked that and I have the markers as stated in the pattern … thank you for the suggestion
Check that the pattern is aligning with previous rows and there are no missed yarn overs for example. That’s always the critical point with lace patterns. If all looks ok, then keep going.
The joins in the yoke are going to eat into the lace anyway. You won’t have a full pattern repeat so those orphan sts that aren’t enough for a full repeat will be worked in stockinette.
