Super chunky wool?

Can anyone tell me the ply equivalent to super chunky. EG: is it 10 ply or bigger. If I wanted to make it with 10 ply, what needles would I use. I tried a tension swab with 6.5 needles, but it was 2 inches instead of 4 inches.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can’t help you on the ply, but I think you’d be better off with 8 or 9mm needles for super chunky/bulky yarn; maybe even 10mm. For the swatch, CO more stitches than is called for to get 4" - like another inch worth. Then measure the number of stitches across 4" in the middle of it.

here super chunky is generally considered 14 ply.

I just looked up some super chunky yarns here and they recommend, in US needle sizes, 11 or 11 1/2. Swatching will give you right one.

I have knitted 14 ply with size 10 needles and been happy with that result but each super chunky is a little different also.

I should also point out that sometimes countries describe yarns a little differently too but I’m guessing an 11 needle would come close to the gauge/tension you’re seeking.

There is no 11 1/2 size needle in the US (was it 10 1/2?), but an 11 is an 8mm, which would be a lot better size than the 6.5mm which is our 10 1/2).

The site said 11 and a half but was obviously wrong. I note in looking again you go from an 11 to 13? Yes, an 11 should be fine.

Yeah, there’s no 12 either… The sizes start going up by full mms at 11s - 11=8mm, 13=9mm, 15=10mm.
