My 8-year-old wants me to knit her a blanket. I would like to do something relatively simple, but not just a plain garter stitch. She chose her yarn. I did not want to spend a ton of money on this because she plans on using this at night while she sleeps and I’m sure she will bring it downstairs when she is chilling in front of the TV. It’s going to get dragged all over the house! I tried to get her to wait to choose yarn until I had a pattern or at least an idea of what I wanted to do, but she fell in love with some yarn at JoAnn’s, and we all know how that goes! She chose TLC Baby, which is a sport weight acrylic. The colors are really pretty. Her room is lime green and pink, and this yarn is white and pink and lime green. Anyway, I bought four skeins of it and I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an easy blanket.
Suggestions on a blanket
Can you double your yarn?
This is what I did:

That looks easy enough! Thanks.
i just did the same pattern using the TLC baby yarn. one problem you may run into though is that the yarn you are using is much thinner than what is in the pattern. I was using a double strand and cast on like it said only to realize i didn’t have nearly enough width on my needles. so i would definitely check your gauge on this one to make sure you are going to have one big enough.
i did mine on size 15 needles and i actually knit five rows and then did the YO row.
super easy and relatively fast. mine was made almost entirely while watching movies at the theatre so it is very easy to do…and it is the ONLY blanket out of the FIVE i have started that i have been able to finish! :happydance: the others were just waaaaaaaaay too boring!
Thanks, brenda!
If I were to do it again, I would also do 5 rows of garter in between.
The yarn I used (that baby clouds stuff) was incredibly forgiving. If I goofed and added an extra stitch somewhere, I did not have to rip out, I could just do a lil fudgee decrease and noone was ever the wiser. I don’t think your yarn will be quite so fluffy though. Nonetheless an easy pattern!
It sure does look like an easy pattern. I just hope I have purchased enough yarn to make it bigger than baby blanket size. I’m too much of a newbie to pick out yarn and THEN find a pattern. She was deadset on this yarn though, so I have to do something with it!
well i double stranded mine and used 2 five ounce skeins of Laddie (blue and lime variegated) and 1 five ounce sken of lime green.
And you came up with size stated in the pattern?
umm…i would say that i had enough yarn to make it that size double stranded…but no…remember i cast on more stitches …i believe i cast on about 130 some odd stitches…and i quit as soon as someone told me it was wide enough! :rofling: but i would say that if i took the length off and added it to the widthe that it would be right around that size.
I was working on the same blanket and thought I would point out the tip at the bottom of the pattern:
The pattern row (Row 5) is alternately worked on right and wrong side rows to keep the blanket square: first the pattern row is worked on a right side row, then 4 rows later it is worked on a wrong side row.
So if you want to do more garter stitch rows in between, I think it would work out better to do 6 garter rows so that you would continue to alternate the pattern row between WS and RS rows.
I used this pattern also to make a baby blanket recently. It looks very nice and was relatively quick to make! I used that Baby Cloud yarn- I can’t imagine how long it would have taken me with sport weight!

i wouldn’t have considered doing it with one strand but two was fairly quick.
Good point, Jenn. Quite honestly, with the Baby Clouds the way it was (floofy and with lots of texture), I am not sure whether an extra row would show or not. I will admit that when I knit mine, I never missed a row, however, I would occasionally add a stitch …
