I am still a newbie to knitting, and it has been such a pleasure to come here for advice and support. Knitting is harder than I thought it would be, and I may have given up if not for all the kind help here. With that said I do have a question! I would like to make a tie-around mini skirt. I measured my waist at 26 inches and wish to use a worsted weight yarn that measures 4.25 stitches per inch. Does anyone know about how many stitches I should cast on? I remember seeing a formula for this situation in a knitting book, but I forget where. I’d really appreciate your help, thank you.
That’s so nice of you to say. We’re all happy to help.
If you’re getting 4.25sts/inch and you want 26inches, multiply 4.25 x 26 which works out to about 111sts cast on. You may need to decrease that a bit to make the waistband a little tighter or you might want to stabilize the waist with a ribbon backing since knitting is so stretchy.
Won’t she need to cast on a few more stitches to allow for the wrap around flap in front?
You’re absolutely right! That’d be some skirt without the wrap. So depending on how much of an overlap you’d like multiply the sts/inch times the total inches (26 + overlap).
Thanks nanna for catching that.
Just what I needed, thank you!
I hope you have joined Ravelry.com. It’s a great FREE source for knitting inspiration and information.
Speaking of, I thought you might like seeing some wrap skirt ideas.
Thanks for that inspiration, RochesterKnitter! I joined Ravelry months ago and haven’t been there for awhile, so I’ll go there pronto. Thanks for the tips.
Be sure to post a pic in What’cha Knittin’ when you finish your skirt! ![]()
