Substituting circular needle size 36" for 24"

I am re-starting a toddler poncho (for the third time!). The pattern instructs to use 24" circular needles. Is it ok to use 36" circular needles? It’s all I have. Could this have caused my twisting before?

How many stitches are cast on and then knit in the round?

Also, always include a link to the pattern when possible.

I need to cast on 180 stitches. I don’t decrease stitches until about round 5.

Here’s the link to the pattern:

If the stitches fit around, then you can use the longer needle. However, if at some point they don’t, you can switch to the shorter needles.

If you’ve had problems with twisting, you can always knit a few rows back and forth to give you more material to work with before you join. It will leave a little gap, but that can be sewn up with the tail.

Thanks, Jan. Not only am I trying to learn to knit, but also trying to learn how to use these threads!

Thank you, Ingrid. That really helps!

Couldn’t you Magic Loop the 36 inch needle to fit the 24 inch pattern?
