Subbing yarn...what did i do wrong?

hey all!
i’m newer to subbing yarn, and i thought i had it figured out, but now i’m really confused.
i’m working on this tank top: http://www.ohmystars.net/craft/knitting/prazorcami.html

i had a giftcard to knitpicks, so i found the yarn used in yarndex, looked at the gage for this yarn, then found shine sport at KP was similar. i calculated how many yards were needed for the original yarn, then i ordered the same yardage in the KP yarn. so i got 3 balls…

in my KAL i started, someone else used the same yarn and said that she’s used 4 skeins of yarn for the original size…

did i calculate this wrong? should i worry? what did i miss?:??

The pattern indicates that the size ball of yarn used was 226m. KP shine Sport is only 110 yds. You’d need at least 4 balls to equal what the pattern is calling for, if not a 5th as back up.

are there different sized skeins of yarn for the original brand used? because i was only looking at yarndex’s numbers…
guh…

well, i guess i’ll have to order some more now…thanks for the help!

Must be. I looked at what was indicated in the pattern.

The yarn brand/type for the pattern comes in 50g and 100g sizes, yardage of course doubled in the 100g size. Your pattern required 2 balls of the 50g, so if you used the 100g yardage in your calcs, you would be off on skeins needed. I always check to see what grams/meters/yards the pattern is using, since a lot of yarns do come in 2 different size skeins/hanks.

hmm. i didn’t know they come in different sizes. thanks for the advice. i’ll use that in the future.
for now? i guess i’m going to have a multicolored tank top…
