Sturdy, Affordable Yarn

So, I’ve decided that I’m going to knit an afghan, and the pattern I found calls for 20 balls (about 183 yards each) of various colors of yarn. I’m looking for something that is going to be (preferably, but not necessarily) easily washable, and that I can afford. Anybody have any suggestions? I’ve thought about going with sugar n cream yarn, since I think it would be pretty affordable, and should be easy to wash if the need arises, but if anyone has any other suggestions, it would be really helpful!

An afghan out of sugar and cream would be extremely heavy. I once made a top out of it and it is so heavy that I never wear it. And S n’ C fades after several washings. Maybe some Lion Brand wool-ease? It’s washable and affordable.

I agree 100% w/ Cdjack. All cotton would be very very heavy! Wool-ease would be nice. Or if you want a cotton blanket Cotton-ease is a good alternative. It’s 50/50 cotton/acrylic. I knit a sweater out of it and it is lovely. Caron Simply Soft is one of my favorite yarns for project like this. I’ve made several afghans out of it. They have all help up well, it’s inexpensive but doesn’t look or feel like it is and it comes in a ton of colors.
What ever you choose good luck and we’ll want to see pictures when it done!

Thanks so much! I think I’m going to go with the wool-ease. It’s the right weight, and I can definitely afford it!

You might want to check out Plymouth Encore, as well. A bit fluffier than Woolease but with the same content and washability.
