Is it the cable itself that is causing the problem? Here’s a video for a left cross cable (sts held in front) that may help. Probably a double pointed needle or true cable needle would work better for your cable than the tapestry needle used in the video.

The pattern is the p1k1 rib that you’ve worked on the previous 7 rows. You can continue by keeping the knit or purl columns aligned with the previous rows.
