Stuck on a pattern instruction

Hi, I have just found this site as I was looking for help with a pattern I am doing. I am not an experienced knitter but have recently started and find I just love it. The pattern I am following is a very plain roll neck sweater for a man but I do not understand the decreasing instruction for the raglan sleeve. It reads as follows: Cast off 5 sts at the beginning of next two rows (so far so good next bit is confusing me) then decrease at each end 2 sts in from the edge. 2 sts twice every 6th row, 2 sts 13 times every 4th row. Any help you can give will be truly appreciated. Thank you. Linda

Welcome to KH!
These kind of instructions are often confusing.
You’re to decrease 2sts in from each edge. After the cast off of 5sts on the next two rows, call the next row, row 1. Then decrease on rows 7 and 13. Then dec on rows 17,21,25,29,33,37 etc until you’ve worked these latter decreases 13 times.

Hi Salmonmac,

Yesss. I cannot thank you enough, 1. For coming back so quick and 2. With the answer. I have been racking my brains but was unable to work out what to do and you have made it crystal clear, why did the pattern have to make it so confusing? I have printed off your email to keep for future reference. Once again thank you so much, will have to go and pick up my knitting from the corner where I threw it!

I’ve been known to do that, too! Don’t forget that the decrease is at each end of the row (2sts decreased per decrease row).

Thank you for that, I think I will put a marker at each end to help remind me that I have to decrease both ends. You certainly need to concentrate when knitting, I still love it though keeps my brain working, well sometimes anyway.
