Hi All
I’m making wristlets/wristwarmers/cuffs…for the most part i’m trying to do them in the round because i can’t find a seam that works for me…but some patterns don’t work in the round (ie. the step is clearly visible and interrupts the flow of the pattern) - if anyone knows how i can overcome this…that would be a major lifesaver cos then i can forget my next struggle…which is seams…
For those patterns that aren’t working in the round…i work them flat and obviously have to seam them…i’ve tried mattress stitch n i don’t like the ridge it makes on the inside…i’ve tried a flat seam and it’s clearly visible and you can see a gap in the pattern…i do a slip stitch selvedge on all my work…should i stop doing this? because i’m finding that holes show up when i pull the sewing yarn to close the gap…they’re not big holes but i just don’t like how it turns out…
I’ve spent the last few days on google & youtube tryin to find a solution…i’m self taught so i’m sure there’s some blindingly obvious solution that i just don’t know about…i’m hoping the brains trust can help me out here…pls ask questions if i haven’t been clear…thank you all in advance
I don’t use a slip stitch at the edges unless a pattern calls for it and sometimes not even then. Certainly if the edge is to be seamed you don’t need it.
There is the Bickford seam which may be what you’ve already tried. It’s not the sturdiest seam and it may not work well in wrist warmers.
The jog is more difficult to deal with. There are ways around the jog in stripes but not that I know of for patterns. I’m working a hat now in the round that has areas of purl and slip sts which conceal the seam but that doesn’t work for many patterns.
She’s so right about the jog being difficult to work with. I’ve tried a couple things in the past, and never completely satisfied. I’ve found the best info for that is from Interweave. If you can find back issues at your library, you may be able to find some well-illustrated articles on the subject. (Sorry, I don’t have dates for any of them.) They have a lot of info on their website, but I don’t know if this issue is included. It might be worth a look, though.
I looked into the jog issue a while back too. Tricks for hiding the jog are often very stitch pattern specific, as exemplified by salmonmac’s hat pattern. There’s no universal magic fix that I know of.
What kind of pattern are you trying to hide the jog on? Maybe we could point you towards something more specific if you show us a picture of those thing(s) you’re working with…?
