Struggling with one line of pattern ‘ 1st and 2nd rows set rib with edge sts. **’

Hi there,

I’m fairly new to knitting and current working through a new pattern (Sirdar 10264 - I don’t think I can share a link as it is paid for).

I’ve gotten stuck fairly early on with the following instructions:

1st Row. K1, * k2, p2, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.
2nd Row. K1, p2, * k2, p2, rep from * to last st, k1.
1st and 2nd rows set rib with edge sts. **

1st and 2nd row is super clear but I’m unsure what the final line is, particularly “ set rib with edge sts. **”.

Can anyone help? I’ve tried searching online but nothing really explains it. I’d hoped that it just meant repeat but I would worry that I’ve missed something.

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to KH! Someone else can explain things better but long story short, just go back to row 1 and work the two rows again as often as instructed. I think this is your pattern. A link to a pattern is fine, posting large portions of a pattern isn’t. Seeing a photo is usually helpful and someone might even decide to buy the pattern linked.

Welcome!
GG has it right, just repeat rows 1 and 2 for the required length or number of times.
These first two rows establish (or set) the placement of the rib pattern. The repeat rows will continue the pattern. You should see columns of Vs (knits) and columns of bumps (purls). The only exception will be an edge stitch at the beginning and one at the end which are always knit.

After the first 4 rows it’ll be easier to see the pattern of Vs and bumps, and you can use the pattern you see to keep you on track with the ribbing.

Thank you so much, I thought this was the case but the edge stitches terminology threw me off slightly as worried I had needed to do something different on the edge stitch but the pattern already says to knit.

Thanks so much for your help, glad to have found this forum as I grow my knitting skills!
