A friend of mine recently had her purse stolen, and I’m determined to make her a purse by the time our holiday work party hits (in two weeks). I’m working off of the following free Berroco pattern:
Since I do not have the time to order the appropriate yarn for this project, I am using my own stash and joining yarn from a different colored skein for each stripe. I’ve noticed that when I join in a new color, a row of it is strikingly visible within the preceding stripe…but only on one side of the piece (if this makes ANY sense at all!). This occurs when I use garter stitch the whole way through. But, if you take a look at the pattern, will this affect the RS of the purse (due to the varying stitches I need to use)?
I’m not even sure if my explanation makes any sense, but if anyone can help/decipher my question, I would greatly appreciate it!
That’s very common, it happens because of the way the stitches interlock on the purl side. As long as you keep doing the color changes so the stripe is on the WS it should look okay. Maybe not the ribbing part, but it won’t be so noticeable.
Look at the picture of the bag in your link - even their model shows the line, right under the clasp! I think with all the stripes and texture, a thin stripe-within-a-stripe can be considered a design feature :mrgreen:
Yes, that’s just the way a color change on a purl row looks. If you don’t like the way it looks, you can juggle some patterns slightly to put the “dashes” on the back. You can also do a little embroidery to make it look like an unbroken line of you like that better. That’s a pretty purse pattern and Melinda is right–the “dashes” under the clasp cetainly don’t hurt the appearance.
Thank you all for your input! So far, the purse is looking great (even with a blending of color between the St st and ribbing rows)! I did not notice at first that the picture of the purse has a visible row under the clasp, and you’re right, the color contrast looks cute! I do agree that finishing out the row with embroidery would make it look like a deliberate stripe. I can’t wait to see this purse when it’s finished!
