Strange felting question

Hi Everyone-

I was wondering when you felt an object does it have to be in stockinette stitches or can you felt something in a rib pattern or even cables?? I was thinking of making a felted bag but want to do something different with it.

Thanks for the help

Textured patterns tend to disappear entirely in the felting process. Cables just leave strange bumps. I know this because I accidentally felted a cabled sweater.

The best way to get funky with felting is to use color–stripes, intarsia, that kind of thing. You could mimic cables with color if you’re feeling particularly inventive

I have lightly felted something with cables and got really nice results, but if I were to fully felt something I only go with stocknette. It is the easiest and fastest, and the stitch pattern doesn’t show anyways.

you can add non feltable yarns to create texture

Thank you for your help. I’m going to try some tests and lightly felt them to see how they come out.

I made a bag that said to use stockinette, but I just used garter because it was going to be felted and it turned out fine. You really can’t see the stitches on most felting projects so it’s best not to go to the trouble to do moss, cable or anything.

I’m also working on a felted bag - mine’s in seed stitch. The pattern says seed stitch is ā€œsturdierā€ - does that sound right?

Seed stitch is certainly less stretch unfelted, you’ll have to let us know post felting.
