I’m knitting the 1516-17 Barnegenser med monster pattern from Ravelry. An all-over stranded child’s sweater. It is Norwegian but I was able to translate it. I’ve completed the body and have started the sleeves in the round at the cuffs but am a bit confused. The sleeves have 36 stitches and the chart has 8 so right from the start the stitch pattern will be off. The only notes on the pattern itself are that increased stitches are gradually knitted into the chart. How does this happen? What do I do with the 4 extra stitches I am beginning with until I have the 8 that I need for a complete section of the chart?
Center the chart on the sleeve so that you have 2sts on each side which aren’t part of the 8 stitch repeat. Then begin the chart with the last 2sts of chart and end with the first 2sts. As you add sts incorporate them into the chart pattern. This is sometimes easier to see on the needles than it is to plan out.
Your won’t start with complete repeats of the 8sts but you will gradually increase until you can work a full repeat on each end and possibly more sts. I like to leave one edge stitch on each end for seaming which is worked in the background color.
Ahhh…that makes sense. The sleeves are knitted in the round but it should still work. I’m doing them two at a time. Any suggestions what type of increase would be best? And where I should add them?? Between the two sets that aren’t part of the chart?
Thanks so much!
Bonnie
You could keep 4 sts at the center underarm (what would be the seam if these were knit flat) in the background color. As you increase one stitch in from the center on each side, incorporate the increased stitch into the colorwork chart. That’s one way but it’s a matter of your preference here too.
I like the knit right loop (KRL) and knit left loop (KLL) increases because they blend in fairly well.
It’s the second set of increases used in this video (3:30min).
But you may also have a favorite increase to use here.
This is great info. I like this Increase! Thanks again.
