Stranded Knitting and Avoiding Jogs

Seems like everything I am working on this fall has a learning curve! I am going to make a cowl with several different colors which requires stranded knitting (I’ve been practicing continental knitting for one color and my usual right hand knitting for the other color). My question is, do I need to do anything to avoid “jogs/steps” as I’m knitting in the round or does it matter when it’s a cowl where it most likely won’t show. I may be overthinking this. Stuck in google videos! Ha! I am making the Dizzy Knitter, Cashmere Carousel Cowl. I am making the Madcap version. I’ll try to attach. Any advise is greatly appreciated!!! I haven’t knitted in the round for a while and I’ve never done stranded knitting.

Personally I wouldn’t bother about trying to avoid jogs as the design of the piece and the way it is worn will mean it is hidden and you likely have enough to think about already.

Enjoy the stranded colour work!

It looksl like the colors are going to flow into each other in a way that will disguise the beginning of round. It’s such a stunning cowl. Design and colors are a wow.

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking but wasn’t confident! Hopefully it turns out well. You’re right, I have a lot to think about. Ha! Fingers crossed.

Thank you so much!!! I have a tendency to try to see before I knit!!! I love the way this cowl looks and the colors. Hoping I can do it justice!!!

Hiya, Patty Lyons has a post on avoiding jogs in stranded knitting!

Thank you!

That is something I understand. If you discover a coping mechanism, please share it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I started this project yesterday and decided to take it one step at a time. So far so good and somehow it’s working!!! Ha! I’ll keep everyone posted. :crossed_fingers:t2::crossed_fingers:t2::crossed_fingers:t2:

Glad it’s going well.
I was similar to you when I first tried stranded colour work, learned to knit continental for the second colour and kept the main colour in my right hand, and probably got lost in some videos and experiments too.
My first proper piece was a sweater, I don’t think the colour chart even flowed from one ‘side seam’ to the other so the pattern didn’t join never mind jogs or jogless.
Keep having fun!

Thank you!!! That’s encouraging that you didn’t give up and have graduated to sweaters!!! And getting lost in videos describes me exactly! Just finally jumped in. I really like it though. Think my hands and yarns are working in tandem. Ha!

I just finished the Dizzy Knitting Cashmere Carousel Cowl (kit) and thoroughly enjoyed it. My first time doing stranded knitting (jogs were not an issue) and I can see how you might get hooked on this technique. On to the next project now. Happy knitting everyone! :heartpulse:

You never know! You could try a small swatch with left over yarn and a free chart to just have a go when it doesn’t ‘matter’.
Although - I understand perfectly, socks will, never be my thing!
