I am approaching the last section of the hood and just finishing the section where I have done a central double decrease (CDD) on each RS and basically worked the pattern for 8 stitches then purled for the WS.
The last section reads:
Row 1 (RS) (k2,p2 ) x 2 to 3 stitches before marker, slip the next 3 stitches together so that the leftmost stitch is “on top”, lift marker, SKP, pass both of the slipped stitches over the resulting stitch, replace marker, k until 8 stitches remain, (p2, k2) x 2.
My question is: it says "pass both of the slipped stitches over but there are 3 slipped stitches, not 2 - should I be passing all three over the resulting stitch? There are no stitch counts provided in this pattern so I have no way of confirming what the designer really intended. (There are other confusing bits, miscounts and actual errors in this pattern, but there is no contact information for the designer - so frustrating!)
You’ve completed the CDD and CDDp section which apparently caused some confusion in the project knitters. So this row occurs after that section?
It’s difficult to tell if this is supposed to be slip 3sts over the knit stitch (not “both”) or work to 2sts (not 3) before the marker and then slip both over (a CDD).
The designer does seem to respond to the “Comments” on the Ravelry page. She says that her email address for pattern support is in the pattern download.
It does say there is an email address, but there isn’t.
This section that I am confused about is AFTER completing 10 rows of the 2 row CDD section. It is clearly a DIFFERENT instruction as it directs you to do 2,(4, 4,6) rows in total, (depending upon size) whereas we are instructed in the previous section to do 10 rows in total. That leads me to believe that the correct instruction should be to slip all 3 stitches over the knit stitch. If it were supposed to be to work 2 stitches, why would she have a completely different section of the instructions? Thoughts?
Hello,
Based on the instructions you’ve given, the phrase “pass both of the slipped stitches over” seems to be a bit of a typo or miscommunication.
Given that you’re instructed to “slip the next 3 stitches together so that the leftmost stitch is ‘on top’,” this would indeed leave you with three stitches that have been slipped, not two. Since the pattern says to “pass both of the slipped stitches over the resulting stitch,” and you’ve slipped three stitches, it makes sense that you would pass all three of the slipped stitches over the resulting stitch.
Here’s the breakdown of what’s likely meant:
Slip 3 stitches together (as directed).
Lift the marker, then perform the SKP (slip 1 stitch, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over).
After the SKP, you would have one stitch on the needle.
Now, pass all three slipped stitches over the one remaining stitch on the needle.
This would be a bit of a decrease, and you would end up with a smaller number of stitches (and possibly a sharper shaping element at the top of the hood, depending on the context of the pattern).
Hazel,
Thank you for such a detailed response. I ended up simply doing 4 more rows of the same pattern as the previous section because when I tried to do exactly as you described, the resulting stitch was very clumsy and in the wrong place in relation to the existing line of stitches, so I tinked it and proceeded from there. The hood is done and I am happy with the result!
salmonmac,
Once again, your help saved the day! I finally finished the hood and not a moment too soon. After struggling with those pesky decreases, I did the 3 needle bind off and, while the finished item is not perfect, I am really happy with it. After blocking, I will send it to my youngest daughter in Vermont, where it will really come in handy!
It’s terrific! My son was in Vermont for awhile and a hood like this is perfect for the weather even now. I’m glad you got the decreases to work. That was a puzzle.
Creations,
I did; there were errors in stitch counts and typos in k2p2 groups that I had to go back and fix, the decreases were really confusing (to me) and the 3 needle bind off started off with some serious cussing, but , but, BUT - I persevered! Thanks for the encouragement!
You did a great job. A hood, or scarf hood, or hooded sweater are on my ‘must make’ list… it’s a long list… but I hope I get a pattern that’s easy and no errors!
