Stocking stitch with circular needles

I am knitting a cowel with circular needles. The only way I can get stocking stitch on the front side of the piece is to knit in purl only. Can someone explain why this is? I read on YouTube that one should use knit stitch only, it it does not come out as stocking stitch when I try this.

I wonder if you’ve flipped the knitting inside out? It’s a bit like this video except that you aren’t knitting on the inside of the circle. Instead you’re purling on the outside.
A fix for the current project would be to flip it so the knit side is on the outside, do a wrap and turn, then knit on the outside of the tube.
