Stitches don't add up?

Hi I am very new to knitting and I am working my way through my first pattern. I am at the part for Neck shaping:

  1. Neck shaping: Next row K22 (neck edge). Turn Leave rem stitches on a spare needle.
  2. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 7 rows. 15 sts.
  3. Cont even until work from beg measures 25" ending with right side facing for next row.
  4. Shoulder shaping Cast off 5 sts beg next row. Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 5 sts.

The relevant parts are italicized. I don’t understand how if I start with 15 stitches, then cast off 5, that there would only be 5 stitches remaining (there should be 10?). Please help me interpret this, thank you!

This version changes instruction 4 to:
Cast off 5 sts beg next row. Work 1 row
even. Cast off 5 (6-7-8) sts on next
and following alt row.

It adds up now.
