Stitches appear squished

Okay, I’ll try to explain this. I’ve completed my first hat. It was a simple pattern - mostly DC and SC. What seems to be happening, however, is that my stitches appear squished lengthwise. The circumference of the hat is perfect, but in terms of length it is too short. I also feel like the bill on my hat is shorter than it should be, which leads me to believe I’m doing something wrong with my stitches to make them too short. In order to get my hat to be an appropriate length, I had to add 4 extra rounds to the pattern. If anyone can offer any suggestions I would really appreciate it. If I’m doing everything right, great, but something makes me think something is off just a bit.

This is what it is supposed to look like:

Here are a couple of close up pictures of my hat:

Here is a picture of the whole thing.

And here is a close up picture where you can see both the double and single crochet stitches.

Here is a picture of what the hat looks like on my “model”:

Is it possible you are doing half double crochets instead of doubles?

A “half double” you wrap, insert and pull up a loop, wrap and pull through 3 loops;

for a double you wrap, insert and pull up a loop, (wrap and pull through two loops) twice.

Nope, I’ve definitely been doing the double crochet, not the Half double. Thanks for the suggestion though! Is it possible I’m inserting my needle in the wrong place on my project?? There seem to be 2 “holes” where I can put the needle in and I’m using the top one, is this right??

Your doubles look like singles in that close-up. If you’d like to review how to form the stitches, you can check out my videos in THIS LIST just to make sure you are doing them right.

That is an awfully cute hat, and the model is pretty cute too!

But the UK terms don’t have single crochet stitch… :think:
