Stitch Question

so-I have this pattern for a baby dress—the bottom trim and the top 1/4 of the dress are in seed stitch, the rest (the giant middle portion) in st st. Can I do the seed stitch potions in garter instead?

So it would be bottom trim and top 1/4 in garter, the middle piece in st st…

(Wasn’t sure if the seed st was somehow chunkier than the garter st in the pattern)

thanks!
Jen

All depends on your gauge. Are there any incs/decs when you transition from seed to st st and back? Garter works wide so you might want to swatch up the seed and garter to see if they give you the same width. (Some work seed tight, some do it on the loose side.) It’s not uncommon to work garter…that’s transitioning to st st…on smaller ndls or work in decs to reduce the width. You wouldn’t want to finish the item and then notice the trim and top flare disproportionately.

hey there,
thanks for your post—I’m resigned to just doing the seed thing. it is just a pain to keep track of! And I found myself messing it up a bit, but I figure, since I’m SUCH a novice, I should stick with what the pattern says.
If I decide to do anything crazy w/ replacing it w/ garter, I’ll update.
