Hello! I’m having trouble figuring out the stitch for this pattern:
I’m stuck on Row 1, the yo and placement of the yarn between the asterisks isn’t making sense to me. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

Welcome!
Maybe the yarn over between 2 purls?
Purl 1, yarn over the right needle to the back, slip the next stitch purlwise then bring the yarn around to the front between the needles to purl the next stitch.
This is a video for a typical yo between 2 purls. You’ll pause where the yarn goes to the back, slip the next stitch and then complete the video by bringing the yarn to the front between the needles.
Thank you! This helped a lot, but after several attempts I am still confused with the second row. Your explanation was wonderful, if you could help me decipher it I would really appreciate it. I’m usually okay with knitting patterns and struggle with crochet…and this feels like I’m reading a crochet pattern. ![]()
Sometimes I read these rows out loud or have my husband read them to see if they make more sense to me.
In row 1 repeat, yarn over the right needle to the back, slip 1 purlwise, yarn round the needle to the front between the needles, p1. (The slip stitch and its yarn over are forming approximately an X.)
In row 2 repeat, bring the yarn forward between the needles, slip stitch and its yarn over (the X) purlwise, bring the yarn over the right needle to the back, k1. (Now the slip stitch has 2 kind of bulky yarn overs accompanying it.)
In the 3rd row you’ll be knitting the stitch and its 2 yarn overs together.
Thank you so much! It’s working and it’s a beautiful stitch. I will try having someone speak the pattern to me next time, that’s a good tip.
I’ve not done it myself but some people read the pattern out loud and record it on their phone. I don’t know if that would help or not but thought I’d throw it out there.
Such a good idea when you don’t have anyone to read it for you! I think I may have needed help with this pattern anyway but next time I will try this. Thanks!
