Stitch numbers don’t tally with pattern

I have a Sridhar Baby Bamboo pattern for a blanket. The first row adds up to 147 stitches when I knitted it, but pattern says 151 stitches. I have added it several times but stuck and can’t move on.

Hello, @Susyknit. Welcome to the KH forum. Is your pattern Sirdar #5477 in the following link?

https://sirdar.com/en/products/5477-textured-baby-blanket-in-snuggly-baby-bamboo?taxon_id=1082

It looks like the edges are all seed or moss (s/m) stitch (depending on stitch pattern names in your region of the globe). And the pannels are alternating s/m or garter stitch. Good news is there are no likely increases or decreases in the pattern.

First look at your cast on and verify all cast on stitches were worked.

  • If any stitches were skipped (or dropped) then you may want to use a video about how to pickup and work dropped stitches.

If you worked all stitches and are at the end of the first row with 147 sts, then it is likely you did not cast on enough stitches. You will just need to increase one sts at each end of row 1 and row 2.

  • Unknit the last 2 stitch (Tink) to the left needle and then increase in each of the last two sts with (knit and purl) in each of the last two stitch. Or you can use any increase you prefer.

If using the increase method then you will need to remember to decrease on the last rows of the completed blanket before bind ioff.

(I will look for appropriate videos or images. Others are welcome to )

Welome to KH. I agree that making sure you start with the right number of stitches is the thing to do. How many does the pattern say to cast on? Unless the pattern says to increase the cast on count should be the same as following rows.
I found it on Ravelry where I could see a bigger photo.

Markers can really help when there are a large number of stitches to count. If you don’t have knitting stitch markers which slide onto the needle you can make a bunch with loops of a different coloured yarn or thread.
I would place markers after the number of boarder stitches at the beginning of the row, then every grouping of stitches needed for the different square panels, whatever number the pattern says these are, then one after the last panel and before the edge stitches.
This way when you lose a stitch you can more easily find out which section of the blanket you lost it from and investigate that area to see how to fix it.
It also makes counting up the entire row much easier.

We all make mistakes when we knit, this is just one tip to help fix them when they crop up.

If you’re still stuck let us know. There’s lots of help here.
