I just started the Adamas shawl, and on row 3 it has you place stitch markers. It says they’re never mentioned again in the pattern. What are they for? Where do I put them, exactly? It looks like between stitches, so I’m not sure what to do with them. What happens if I don’t use them?

The stitch markers are there to visually mark the edges of the main pattern repeat described in the charts. They set off the two edge stitches at the end of each row and the center stitch. Place them on your needle between the stitches indicated, and simply slip them from one needle to the other every time you encounter them. I found them helpful to remind me to work the edge stitches in garter stitch and alert me that I had made an error in the first half of the row if my stitch count before the center marker was off. But there is no reason you couldn’t skip using them if you don’t want to.
I also used them in making the Adamas shawl and as jhelanee said found them very helpful to remember to work the edge stitches in garter and to see the center stitch throughout.
Good luck with the shawl, I found it enjoyable to make and very pretty when done and blocked.
According to the Notes they’re just there to mark off sections of the row and you slip them every row. 2 of them separate the edge st from the pattern, they may not be necessary. And the other 2 are to mark off the center st; you might not need them after the first few rows as you should be able to see which one is the center stitch.

If you take a look at the Cast On, you’ve got Knits and YO - yarn overs.
The markers are indicated by the abbreviation [B]pm[/B] (Place Marker) in the Cast On instructions and that’s where the marker should go.
Stitch markers are mainly used to ‘map out’ pattern repeats, especially in lace work. There’s nothing too complicated in using them - you’ll probably come across patterns like this:
[COLOR=Magenta]*[/COLOR]K2tog twice; YO K4, K2tog twice, repeat. The asterisk is where you place the first marker - when you’ve knitted all the 12 stitches in the pattern, just pop on another marker - if you get interrupted or want to put down your knitting, the markers will show you where you are up to on the pattern.
They’re just little signposts, so you don’t get lost in the fog.

Thanks everyone! I’ve used them before to mark actual stitches but never like this so I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do ro why. I get it now
