Stitch Holder

I am knitting a baby sweater.
The pattern for the back is below. My question is it seems that for the shoulder shaping I am putting stitches on a stitch holder and then immediately removing them and knitting on them. Why would you do this? Isn’t a stitch holder used for holding stitches to be worked on at a later time?

Back
Cast on (42) 52 stitches
Work in seed stitch for 1 inch (2.54 centimeters)
Work in Stockinette stitch for 10 inches (25.4 centimeters)

Shoulder shaping…
Cast off (5) 10 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows
Place 32 stitches on the stitch holder for collar.
Transfer stitches from stitch holder onto needles
Work in seed stitch for 4 inches (10.16 centimeters)
Cast off loosely

Hello
That does seem a little strange. Is that exactly as it is worded in the pattern?
What is the name of the pattern?

It is called Pudding Pie Sweater by Leanne Dyck - Ravelry.

This pattern has several comments on ravelry about being poorly written or needing some amendments or guess work.

The page you linked to the pattern (thank you) has a message from the designer saying you can contact them with questions or if the pattern is incorrect. You might like to do that.

My personal guess, having never worked this pattern, would be that the back neck stitches are put on hold, then you move on to the front. When the front is worked in 2 balls for shoulder shaping there are more stitches to put on hold. I would then think that at that point all 3 sections of stitches are taken off the hold (front right, back, front left) and worked together in the stitch pattern for the number of cm for the size and then cast off all on the last row. Meaning the collar is knitted in one section, not 3 which would need seaming.

As I’ve never made this pattern this is just a guess. I’d probably work up to the neck on the back, then the front, then stop and consider all aspects before moving on. I would think that once you had got to the point of all 3 sets of stitches being on hold you might need to seam the shoulder seam and THEN move on the knitting the collar.

What do you think?

Thanks so much. I will contact the designer. But I will also give your suggestion a try. I was thinking that I would just knit and then leave on stitch holder and go to the front and figure out how they all connect.

Let us know if you hear back. Sometimes designers add errata but I didn’t see any unless I just missed it.

Just trying to get my head around how you’d set out the collar and wondering if you might need a circular needle that you can work with magic loop even though this is an open collar.
There are many more experienced knitters here and someone will certainly have some ideas and options if you don’t hear back from the designer so do post again for help when needed.

It’s a very cute top, shame it’s causing a tricky problem.

Thanks really appreciate your help
