Hello I’m new. I have a question and hope someone can help me.
I am planning to knit the Riddari pattern. I want to steek it and was questioning where to insert the steek. This is my first attempt at steeking. Am I correct in placing the 9 steek stitches in the middle of the body cast on? Is 9 too many? I am making size M and the yolk states that after the sleeve divide their are 77 body stitches. Do I place the steek here in the middle of these. I know I need to start them at the bottom since it’s a bottom up sweater. Thanks for any help.
Is this the pattern?
Yes it is
Beautiful sweater!
Welcome to KH!
Yes, place the steek at what will become the center front. Read a little further in the pattern to make sure you understand where that will be (likely not a problem but just in case).
Seventy-seven sts for the front? Yes, the steek would go in the center of these. Nine sts is more than usual. I usually see and have worked with about 5 maybe 7sts. In aran wool that should be enough.
It’s a really lovely and impressive sweater. Enjoy working it and do show us a photo when you finish.
Oh thank you for clarifying this. So I am to place the BOR marker in the middle of the 5 steek stitches?
You can probably place it wherever you wish. Having it in the middle of the steek would avoid any obvious jog in the yoke pattern since it would occur at the steek.
Other than that, patterns usually have BOR marker at a side side underarm. I can’t see that it would matter.
I guess I need more help with this and I gave the wrong stitch count in the previous post. It says to cast on 184 sts and join to work in the round. I see that I have 80 front sts and 80 back after the sleeve divide. 12 sts are removed for each underarm. To cast on and place the 5 steek sts where would I insert them so my steek is down the center front? I’m assuming it’s placed in the front stitches at 40 but I don’t understand how to figure this out when casting on. Thanks for any help.
You can check what the pattern says about casting off or holding the underarm sts but usually it’s 6 at the BOR, knit the front, 12sts for the second underarm, knit the back then 6sts at the end of round. So you’ll have 12 sts on each side for the underarms.
If the BOR is at the side seam, then you would place the steek after 46sts in the cast on. This is an attempt at a diagram to show that:
The cast on is the lower diagram. You would have 46 front sts, the steek sts, 46 front sts and then the 92sts for the back. That adds up to 189 assuming 5 steek sts.
Just come back if it’s still a problem.
Thank you especially for the drawing. I am a visual learner. I’m ready to go armed with this information.
Hi again. So I got the steek cast one correctly thanks to your awesome help. But now I can’t figure out how to mirror the sides of the color work on each side of the steek. Is there some way to figure this out. I’m starting to feel I’ve bit off too much with trying to do this without a pattern. Thanks for anything you can help me with.
You have the pattern chart? Determine where in the chart you would like the center front to be. (This will be interrupted by the steek.) Then count backwards in the chart repeat to see where the BOR should be (46sts from the steek depending on possible increases or decreases in the body).
Double check this so you’re sure the sts on either side of the steek are the pattern you want.
