Steeking a garter knit

I’ve just finished my first garter knit scarf, but it is far too wide. I’d like to split it in half and combine the 2 ends. However, I can’t find any tutorials on steeking a garter stitch. Is this possible? Can anyone guide me or is this not going to work? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

It should work. You would have to stitch down on each side of the center once or twice with a sewing machine making sure to include each row. Then cut between the double stitch lines. This is going to flatten the edge and take away the stretchiness of the side.
Usually the edges after steeking are covered by a hem or edging and you’d definitely need to add something to cover the machine stitches. Maybe give this a try on a small swatch to see how it goes before taking on your scarf. Let us know how it goes. You may be breaking new ground here.
