Starting my first sweater

Hi all,
I have been knitting for about 2 yrs now and am finally ready to make the leap into knitting my first sweater. I am starting with a garter stitch cardigan for a friends baby. My question is this:

the pattern calls for circ. needles, but Its a cardigan? Won’t using circular needles cause me to knit in round creating a giant tube?? I understand that it would work well for pull over or v neck but not for a cardigan. Can u help?

Thank you
Jenn

p.s. the link to the sweater is here … oops cant post a link just yet. but the pattern in at jennifer hoel word press and its the garter yoke baby cardigan

You don’t have to knit a tube with circular needles if you don’t want to. When you cast on the number of sts needed, don’t join in the round. Just knit back and forth on the circular.

If you don’t join the sts, but just turn at the end of the CO and each row like you do with straight needles, your knitting won’t be in the round. A circular is suggested because it can hold the sts easier, there’s a lot of them when you do a sweater seamlessly.
