Speaking of booga bags (again!)

would you recommend someone try making it the regular size first before trying to supersize one, just to get the hang of it?

I would say it depends on how comfortable you are knitting in the round. Frankly–the booga was only the 2nd full sized project I ever completed…it was sooooooo easy. That being said–I don’t think I would have felt comfortable trying to double it until I knew what I was doing.

I have made four booga bags. I made the first two with Noro and ran them through my machine twice. I think mine turned out to be a nice size - not too big and not too small. I don’t like HUGE purses though. I used WOTA for the other two bags, and they felted quite a bit smaller after just two cycles in the washer.

I doubled EVERYTHING for the first booga I made for my sister. It was TOO big. If I were to make that pattern again, I would increase everything by 50%.

After having made both regular-sized Boogas, a regular-sized Oregon Tote, and several other Booga-Sized Oregon Totes (confusing, I know), here is my advice:

Knit your Booga using two strands of wool held together, CO 34 stitches like the pattern calls for, but use Size 11 needles instead of 10-1/2, and knit about 60-80 rows after picking up stitches along the base.

You will end up with a tote bag that is about 12" tall by 10" wide. It’s really a nice size, and you’ll be really happy with the fabric that felts up w/ the two strands of yarn – much more sturdy!

Sounds like my supersize it bag will be ok then - I am doing something similiar - am using double stranded WOTA, only thing I did differently than Dot’s instructions was I used 13’s because I knit way too tightly. I think I cast on 54 and knit 38 and now am going up the sides…It is gobbling up my WOTA (4 skeins ends up yielding about 3-4 inches of stockinette…) and I had a panic attack yesterday where I thought I might be going in a wrong direction and would be way short on yarn even after I ordered 6 more skiens of WOTA. Its just so…BORING to knit! THAt is the biggest issue with it!

Maybe someone could post a picture of their booga bag next to something like a teacup or something that is a standard size so the rest of us can see the real size. Maybe someone who doubled it could do it too, so we can get some idea of the size. Thank you.

To double or not to double (the yarn that is)?

Anyone done one both single and double stranded? Is the double substantially more sturdy than the single?

I have friends who have finished several boogas and made them just slightly larger. They used single strand Noro, and the bags are fairly sturdy. I think it would be awfully hard to get your Noro colors to line up exactly.

My plan, when I finish the supersize momstrosity, is to make quite a few boogas as gifts. I am going to double strand on the bottom with a matching yarn - in lambs pride or something a bit more economical than Noro. Then go on up the sides with the noro. I can’t take credit for this idea - I am going to somewhat follow these directions:

She says this will only take 2 skiens of Noro. I think in order to get the bag size I want, if I make it larger, will take 4 skeins if I just use Noro - and since I am making as gifts and you never know what people will think…
