Hi I’m knitting from pattern James C Brett pattern JB144 it is row 2 just the 2 purl stitches at the beginning of the cable on the left front side. It just looks wrong to me. As anyone else done this pattern? If so I would be grateful for any help and advice.

It may be that it will look strange until you’ve worked several rows. Then the knits and purls will settle into the cable. Or it could be that there is something wrong in the pattern. The cables are set off by purl sts.
Would posting a photo of your work so far help?
This is probably a good place to put in a lifeline just in case there is an error and you need to rip back.

It’s very common for there to be purl stitches before and after a cable, so that the cable stands out more. Can you post a few lines of the actual pattern?
You could also try doing a swatch with stash yarn, just the cable plus 4-5 stitches on either side, to see how the pattern works out.
