Someday I'll learn my math (and get more needles)

Sooo-- I’m wanting to knit the Meret from Ravelry (sorry, I don’t know how to link it). I can’t seem to get gauge. The pattern asks for 18 sts x 24 rows. The closest I get is 20 sts x 26 rows on 8s and 9s (I don’t know how that is even possible). I only have a size 9 24" circular, so that’s not even going to work for this project. I have to use my size 8 DPNs. Why, you ask, don’t I just buy the right size DPNs?? I would buy more needles, but I’m in school and saving up for the Options. I just don’t want to add more to my collection before I can get them.

I’d planned on making the medium extra slouchy. I’m trying to figure out if I should knit with the large size CO sts but follow the directions for the medium. I figured that with a CO of 80 sts for the medium hat in MY gauge, it will get me a 16" size. Not what I want. However, if I CO the 88 sts for the large hat, I will get a 17.6" size. Sounds good. Am I thinking this through correctly?

Thanks for thinking through this annoying problem that could easily be solved with money, more knitting experience, and/or better math skills. :muah:

I’m pretty sure that would work fine.

I agree. Part of what would affect it though would be how stretchy your yarn is and the kind of fiber it’s made of.

One thing you could do if you find the band is too loose is to get some elastic thread, and thread it through the band.

Good luck!

Thanks. I’m going to try knitting the large with my smaller gauge. See how that goes. I’ll post my (hopefully fabulous) FO!
