I have completed the body and have begun working on the head. As instructed by the pattern I’ve casted on 12 stitches, knitted 1st row, purled 2nd row and Increased to 24 stitches for 3rd row. Next, the pattern says to purl all WS rows (which are even numbered rows) and I’m confused because after completing row 3, that would mean purl the next row…right? Yet, it seems I am on a knit row!!! Row 5 wants me to increasing and so I’m reluctant to begin purling on this row 4. Can someone just take a look at the pattern and just tell me if I shld be purling or what? Thanks!
The way I read it all even numbered rows (2,4,6, etc) are purl rows and wrong side, and the odd numbered rows are knit. So you would knit row 1, purl row 2, knit row 3, purl row 4, etc. The increase and decrease rows are done on the knit rows.
thanks, susan. I do understand that the WS rows are the even numbered rows, etc. It seems however that after completing the 3rd row, my stitches appear to be ready for knitting…not purling, that is why im confused. Also, on row 5, it says to increase to 36 stitches from the 24 I already have. I’m confused with that as well, because 24 + 6 increased stitches isn’t 36!!! Arrgh, i was doing so well, now I’m confused all over again! Any additional help would be great!

It looks like row 1 is knit, row 2 purl, increase to 24 sts while knitting row 3, and row 4 is purl. row 5 is knit with increases. Truthfully, row 5 doesn’t make sense to me. You should be increasing from 24 to 36 sts but the row only calls for 1 x 6 increases over 12 sts. I think perhaps it should be [k1 inc in the next stitch] 12 times. What do you think?
Did you count the cast on as a row? It’s not - cast on then knit row 1, purl row 2, knit row 3, purl row 4, and so on. Don’t worry about counting the rows though, if you just finished a knit row, turn and work a purl row; when you finish a purl row, turn and work a knit row.
Yes! I agree…i just wasnt seeing how the increase was working as the math just didn’t seem right. I think I will try the increase this way because surely it does seem the only way to get to 36. Thanks, so much, Salmonmac! I’m a little knitting crazed, but not THAT much, I don’t!
