Socks

Hi, I am knitting my first pair of socks. I did a little gauge swatch, ( obviously not big enough!) and thought I was getting 7sts for 1 ". so many patterns for my size say CO 64. Well my 12 yr old thought I was making baby socks

Do they look tighter at first, while still on the needles? ( I am hoping you say yes! or what I see is what I get. I have about 2 1/2 " done.

The directions say the sock is 91/2 " in diameter. I am lucky if mine is half that. I kniow I knit tight by sheeesh. I even casted on with double needles so the cast on would be loose.

Thanks
Cindy

What yarn does the pattern call for? If it calls for the same size you’re using, then trust the pattern

Also, is the top of the sock ribbed? If so, then it will pull in a lot and look much smaller than it actually is.

And, dpns can skew your perception of the circumfrence of the sock. Try sticking your hand in and pulling the dpns up close to your elbow. If what you’ve knit fits, then you’re likely doing okay!

They do look small when you first start out. If you guage was on with what the pattern recommends then keep on knitting. If they do end up being too small, you can say that you were knitting them for your 12yo! I actually had this happen once. My gauge was on, I made them exactly like I was supposed to for my size and there is no way that they were a lady’s small. I ended up giving them to my 10yo!

The sock yarn recommends size 2, people at the LYS even used size 1 with the same yarn. It does have ribbing like you said. I will trust the pattern and hope they stretch a llot!
They sure wont be sagging!
Thanks for the help.

Wow those are small…but that’s pretty standard for sock yarn.

Good luck! And post progress pics for us!

Check your gauge on the sock you are knitting (the 2 inches you have done) … find stitches to inch and divide into 64 … if you are still getting 7 stitches per inch your piece should be 9.1 inches around. When you sqoosh your dpn’s to make the piece flat … each side should be 4-1/2ish inches … if it isn’t you need use a different size needle …
BELIEVE ME … if it doesn’t fit … you will NOT enjoy knitting the second sock!!!

I am having a similar issue with my first real sock, also (I made a practice sock, but that was tiny). I have about 1" done, and it looks like a doll’s sock. I made a swatch as recommended and followed the pattern. It is pretty stretchy, so I’m hoping it will turn out to be big enough. If it turns out too small, I’ll just make the other one and give the pair to my 10 year old DD. I won’t be able to give it to my 12 year old, because she wears the same size I do.

If you’re doing 2 X 2 ribbing for the cuff and leg, your sock will look impossibly small at first. It stretches a lot. My main issue with fitting socks is to make the foot long enough. I like them snug, but I made one pair a little too short and had to give those away. It’s true that you will HATE knitting the second sock if the first one doesn’t fit!

I used size 1 needles and sock yarn (simple stripes from knitpicks). I followed Silver’s sock tutorial even though she said to use size 2 or 3 needles. I just didn’t like the way the sock knitted up with size 2 needles; too holey. I thought it looked horrifically small when I was on the ribbing, but it worked! They are now my favorite pair of socks!
