Completed first double pointed 4 needle socks… Yeah! First sock made on aluminum needle size 2. Second sock made on new bamboo needles size 2 (much easier!). However, this Serenity Sock Weight by Premier Yarns pattern “Silky Soft Socks” is way too big. The Second Sock done on the bamboo needles is even bigger than the first sock. They are not too big in the foot length as I adjusted from size 8 to size 5 but are way too big in the width of the leg and ankle portion. Even if I switched to size 1 needles I think they would still be too big. Has anyone else made this pattern or have any suggestions? Do some sock patterns come in small, medium and large?
Changing needle types in the middle of a project is not usually a good idea. Not only can the size be slightly off, but the materials are different. Metal needles are more slippery and the bamboo grabs causing your gauge to change. I suspect that is the issue here, but if you were more relaxed when knitting the second sock you may have loosened up a bit as well. You may also need to knit a smaller size.
There isn’t much you can do at this point except live with it or rip one of them out and do that one on the same needle as the other one.
The pattern starts with a cast on of 64. I find my legs are happy with a cast on of 56. Here’s another basic sock that starts that way.
ALso, is the 'fabric’created too loose? nice and firm? If it’s not firm enough for a sock and is too loose, you may need a smaller size needle.
And what Jan said about type of needle is so true - do both socks with the same set of needles.
I usually cast on 60 or so myself. I realized after reading Marilyns post that I forgot to say that I use a US 0 or 1 for socks. That makes a difference in size, too.
