Socks HELP: Men's 8D and Woman's 5 1/2

I need to make 2 pairs of socks for Christmas and wondered if anyone has similar foot sizes and can measure circumference for me. They are both small-ish in feet and I’m afraid if I don’t reduce circumference will be too large.

Hers: 5 1/2
His: 8D (I think the D means it’s narrow, but I’m not sure)

I don’t know about circumfrence, but I do know that an 8D in men’s is a normal width (C is narrow, E is wide).

I have made socks for a woman with size 5 feet and I really didn’t do anything to change the pattern other than make it shorter.
