Socks for Wellies

I am enjoying my return to knitting and have just completed a very nice lace and cable baby blanket, a pair of booties, and a cap. I have done larger projects in the past. HOWEVER, I have never attempted socks. I have a new pair of wellington boots (the tall rubber boots). They fit very nicely around the calf, ankle and foot. In fact they are a little difficult to pull on past the ankle, once on they are very comfortable and there is some room for socks. My questions are:

  1. How thick a wool would you suggest (it gets cold here)?
  2. How do I choose a pattern that will fit closely to ankle and calf?

Any insights you have will be very welcome!

Thank you

I have made a couple of pair of socks with worsted or even thicker yarns and I don’t recommend it. The heavy yarn makes for big stitches and if you are going to be walking or standing in your boots you may find you can feel the stitches and it is not a comfortable thing. I even have a picture of my feet after I’ve worn a pair of these socks and I guess I’ll share it. LOL

So I recommend a regular sock weight yarn or possibly a sport weight. As far as the fit goes you might look for something that has some shaping in the leg part of the sock.

MerigoldinWa, that is funny.

Most sock yarns contain 75% wool and would be warm. If you choose a rib type pattern they should be pretty snug fit.

OUCH ! Makes my back hurt just thinkin about standing on those!!:roflhard:

Thank you so much for your picture–I got the message!

Great tutorial/pattern for warm thick socks that fit.

oh, those waffle feet are just too funny!!!

 MerigoldinWa, thanks for sharing that picture with us!

That sock pattern that Knitasha shared looks very nice. I noticed it was made with a worsted, but maybe if you knit it tight enough you can avoid waffle feet. I don’t know. But those socks sure look nice.

I got a laugh over my feet myself, as you can see in the picture. LOL
