We live in South Texas where I was running the air conditioner and wearing my sandals today. I would like to knit up some socks for the Knitting Olympics, but wondered if I could make them out of cotton. Anyone know? Anyone try it?

Socks for warm climates?
I’m curious about this, too. I’ve seen cotton yarn with a bit of elastic in it, but haven’t been brave enough to buy it…
Cotton by itself wouldn’t be any good, as it tends to lose it’s shape.
It would need some elastic product blended with it.
Oh yeah does it ever lose its shape: I have some really cozy (cold weather) cotton ragg socks; I really love them, but by the end of the day they are a saggy droopy mess!

Cascade Fixation is cotton + elastic…I felt up some socks made from it and they seemed like they’d be pretty comfy…pretty colors too

At first I thought, oh my, these are ridiculous (and they are) but considering I live in my sandals DH will love that I dont have stinky feet. How cool!

I’ve not used a cotton/elastic blend yet…
Plymouth Sockatta is a cotton/wool blend. You don’t feel the wool, but it gives the socks the elasticity they need. Regia also makes a cotton/wool blend. I also live in the hot southland - and wear socks made of these year round.
Really? If you can wear them in muggy South Georgia, there’s hope here in North Alabama!

I live in Florida and still make wool socks. Remember, wool breathes! BUT I’m currently knititng some socks in KP Dancing (Tap) that are 41% Cotton, 39% wool, 13% nylon, 7% Elastic. It is an easy feeling yarn and is knitting up nicely. It’s also $2.99 a ball, so for $6 you can make a pair of socks (“Compare to $8.49 for other cotton/wool blend sock yarns”) (Yes; I have my KP catty sitting right next to the computer )
Also lacy socks would be good for our warmer climate. I did wear my wool socks at Disney this past week and they were fine.

Oh, yes, in fact, you can probably go with the wool ones and be okay, too. Unless it is above 85 degrees, I wear my wool ones in hot weather, too!!
I’m working on a pair of socks with KPs Dancing yarn, and I was unsure first how to hold for tension, because it’s so elastic. I think you just have to find your own and then it’s very nice to work with and the color’s are good too!!
I’ve wondered about tension when working with elastic yarns…Are you keeping yours pretty much like the rest of your knitting?
I haven’t noticed much “spring” in with the elastic and my knitting has been pretty much to gauge. There isn’t much elastic in the Dancing.
In using Sock It To Me (again, similar to Cascade Fixation), I tried to compensate for the springyness in my first footie and overcompensated - it was a little too loosely knit (and will remain that way as I was too lazy to frog 
) But for my second footie, as I didn’t want to have to fix loose-ladders and holey parts again, I knit at a ‘normal’ tension and it came out looking…normal! Not too stretched and not loose. I only had to slightly fix the ladder between 2 needles. I did not pull as tightly as I should have between two of my needles and I still got that ladder effect. Next time, I’m treat the yarn entirely as a ‘regular’ yarn (pulling snuggly between dpns) and seeing what happens. I’m sure it’ll turn out just fine. 
Be not afraid - I really like this yarn now. In the pattern I was using, it cautions that this yarn will shrink a little, but I haven’t washed yet and no, I didn’t do a swatch. I figured since my feet are slightly smaller than Mom’s I could always wear them if they shrunk too small for her.
