Hi Everyone,
I’m hoping that this is a very simple problem and someone can help me. I’m knitting a sock on a 9 inch circular needle. It is plain stockinette stitch the whole way through with the knit stitches on the outside of the sock and the purl “bumps” on the inside. When it came time to turn the heel I switched to double pointed needles. Once the heel was turned and I needed to start knitting again I noticed that when I just knit my knits are on the inside of the sock and my purl “bumps” are on the outside. Does anyone know what happened and more importantly how to fix it? I’ve ripped it out once and the same thing happened again. Thanks for your help!
Sounds like the same problem I have on DPNs. I knit inside out on them. If that’s the case with you, you have to make a choice:
Figure out how to knit right-side-out on them - or -
Compensate for knitting inside out and make sure you turn the sock inside out before putting them on the DPNs (that’s my choice since I got tired of trying to learn the other way - I just couldn’t do it).
Which side of the circle are you working on (if the circle is held level), far or near? Which side were you working on? I bet that’s where you changed.
If so.
Take it back to the knit stitches, hold it so the finished section is down (if the circular is held level), the working side is closest to you and the yarn is coming off the right needle. Insert right needle into the left stitch and start knitting.
That should put you back on track (unless you were working on the far side to begin with).
If that doesn’t sound like the right place for you to start knitting on the close side of the circle the pattern might be a row off or you might have added or lost a row. Knit across to where it seems right to start the pattern again.
Debra & anyone else interested in socks should join us over at the ‘any sock KAL2’ her on KH, just go to the KAL section. We’re always looking for new people. BTW I think Mike gave you good advice, if you need more, just ask.
I started out on the far side and am now on the near side so that makes sense. I’ll pay better attention next time – this is my fourth sock and the first time that this has happened. At this point if I purl instead of knit – will that work out? It’s just a lot slower for me.
I’ll need to re-work out my decreases for the heel and toe for purl stitches rather than knit stitches. Right now the decreases call for knit 2 together and SSK. I can purl two together…can i SS Purl?
I think that should work just fine, are you prepared to purl the rest of the sock? or would you rather re- do the heel?
Just as a point of information, I found that in my first few sock attempts, I kept ending my heel turn on the wrong side of the heel, which meant picking up my gusset stitches on the wrong side of the gusset, and that put me backwards for working across the instep…which meant that after the heel turn I was “backwards,” and knitting inside out.
i.e., if you end the heel turn on the appropriate row, this might not be a problem–at least that was where I messed up!
Thanks Everyone!! I think I may try a couple of decreasing rows purling, if that works out ok I’ll just keep going, if not I’ll rip back and do the heel a third time. :wall: Thank you for all of your help!! Next time I’ll be extra careful!
