Sock sizing

Most sock patterns allow you to make the length of the foot to fit. This is obviously quite handy, but I never know how long to make the sock. Especially for a sock with lace, it’s good to make the sock a little small, so the lace will open up, isn’t it?

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for good sock sizing?

I haven’t had to change sizing 'cause it was a lace pattern or anything…usually it depends on the toe you do but I usually start the toe at 2" and sometimes 1.5" from the longest toe
