Sock size

I’m knitting the socks in my signature & the gauge is 15 sts=2" on size 1 needles.
I cast on 72 sts, knit the ribbing with 0, now am knitting the leg & there are no decreases in the pattern.
isn’t 9.6" around too big for any man’s ankle, though?
or are some socks just meant to have big ankles? :??
thanks!

That does seem a bit big.

umm… my ankles are 9.5 inches around.

If you have the man on hand, you could measure him…

ok so his lower calf is 11" and his ankle is 9".
do you think I can just leave it the way it is?
I wouldn’t know how to get it back to the number of stitches I need for the instep otherwise.
?

Hi,

You could always decrease 4 to 6 stitches at the bottom of the calf just by K2tog evenly spaced in the round. Then knit until 2 or 3 rows before the heel flap, increase back to the correct number of stitches by M1s, then continue on with the heel and foot.

The picture of the pattern doesn’t look like there is any pattern such as lace or cables that would be disrupted by tapering then increasing. Just remember the ankle has to be large enough to go over the heel when you pull it on.

Happy Knitting! :happydance:

I think that is too complicated for me.
He will have to settle for baggy ankles!
But for future reference is there a way to tell how small is too small for the ankle to go over the heel without trying to put it on the foot in question? (The foot’s in NY.)

another option is to decrease needle size for the area that you want to be tighter. I see that you’re using size 0, but i know you can find 00 or 000 in dpns.

Ribbing pulls in and by it’s very nature hugs the ankle and lower leg so I think you’ll probably be fine. I don’t think I’d do any decreasing because you want it big enough to put the foot through and the foot is usually larger than the ankle I think.

thanks Jan and Sandra!
I’m definitely just following the pattern then.
do you know where to get sock needles that small? I have only seen the long ones for lace knitting.

I got mine as a pack of sock knitting needles…
They have them at Joann.com here.
