Sock ribbing and needle choice

my grandma is having trouble knitting fingering yarn on a 2 needle it comes too loose, ribbing ends up loose , when this happens she usually goes down a needle but a 1 she cant manage, what should she do for the sock ribbing? she asked if reducing number of stitches would make ribbing tighter around persons leg then increase stitces as she continues the sock?

Yes, your grandma could try decreasing the number of sts. The thing is to make sure that the cast on with a reduced number of sts isn’t too tight. I wonder, would twisting the knit sts by knitting into the back of the stitch be enough to tighten up the ribbing?
