Sock questions

Ok, I completed my first sock weeks ago and then got sidetracked on several other projects…and I really loved how it turned out but hey who needs one single sock, right?

So, this idea of knitting two socks at once is kind of intriguing to me, as well as the idea of knitting on circulars - while I don’t “hate” the dpns, they can make me a bit cranky especially when if something falls off one.

So----in order to try this - would you suggest going through this tutorial http://www.socknitters.com/2circs/index.htm or just pick up Cat’s book?

And…I would love feedback from those of you who have tried both methods.

…so I knit socks on 4dpns in the past. Well, okay, I admit it. I’ve never had the knitting stamina to really knit grownup socks. I’ve never made socks bigger than toddler size. But I did make them toe-up and top-down and in cute different colors.
Knitters with ADHD love baby projects!

Since that phase of my short, intense knitting career I have met, purchased, and been deeply in love with my Denise circulars, and now am feeling the itch to return to socks and learn to knit them on circulars. I want to avoid knitting on straight anythings in the future, circs are just so much more comfortable!

Thanks very much for posting the link to the tutorial! I will definitely check that out! (Too bad I can’t come back and change my vote in the poll).

Let me guess…you were using metal dpns?? You might wanna try bamboos…they arent as slippy and Ive never had anything fall of them…

Im just finishing my first pair of socks (on 4 DPNs)!!! :cheering: I have tried the circ method for both one and two socks…I was surprised to discover that I did NOT like knitting that way!

Yay ,youall!! :cheering: It isn’t easy to knit socks on dps–but bamboo is much better than those old hard steel or aluminium ones!! And I got some of the 5 inch birch dps from somewhere, and they are really easier to handle once you get used to them. I would, however, like to TRY the magic loop and the 2 circs, as well. Just for further reference. Someitmes, when I’ve finally finished 1 sock, it’s hard to cast that second one on, knowing how much work it is after I’ve done the heel, just to do that stockinette til I get down to the toe. It seems like FOREVER to get to the toe, doesn’t it!! Havne’t done Toe-ups yet either. I am a VERY slow knitter, and I haven’t a good attention span, and I am amazed at all the stuff youall have on the needles, and finish so rapidly!! And I have to say, I’m a smidgen jealous!!

I knit socks in tandem on 5 dpns; I am much more comfortable with 5 rather than 4. I’ve not knit socks in a good long time & when I start knitting socks again…WATCH OUT!! I hope to learn 2 socks on 2 circs with the same tutorial that you have shown, “Sheron’s 2 socks on 2 circs” from socknitters.com, it’s VERY DETAILED!! Truthfully, I don’t know if it will sway me away from my tried, true & loved 5 dpn tandem sock knitting…but I do so want to learn :cheering:

Actually the stitches falling off the needle were caused by a) a large 80 lb labradork, b) an 18 year old boy c) a 15 year old boy or d) a combination of the above. I have birch and bamboo and yes, they do grip the stitches-…I learned the hard way though that my basket needs to be put up on the mantle so that nobody can mess with my work!

Can I vote twice? I actually knit either on 5 dpns or with two circs.I really don’t have a preferred method…So far I have only knit one sock using two circs but I am very interested in trying the two sock method next pair. Right now I am VERY SLOWLY working on a pair of Trekking Socks using size 0 dpns…IF I ever finish this I plan on trying the two socks, two circs method.

I knit socks using magic loop. Nothin’ like it, in my opinion!

I still have a sock that’s on 3 dpns, but used to be on 4 (I’m at the toe). And I just started a sock using Magic Loop. I happen to really like magic loop, I find it interesting and my stitches don’t slip off as easily. I can push them down to the cable and not worry about something falling off. I like dpns, tho, I’m not opposed to them…I guess what I use will depend on what pattern I’ll end up using with future socks. I am anxious to try 2 at a time, toe-up socks on 2 circs.

I prefer to knit socks one at a time using 2 circs. I often use a set of 5 dpn’s though, because the smallest size of circs I have is a US2, and I often make socks on size 0 & 1 dpn’s. they have to be metal now, I’ve snapped the size 1 bamboo dpn’s I had on accident mid sock a while ago.

I usually use 2 sets of dpns and do both socks at once. I have the book about using 2 circulars, but it doesn’t make sense to me. I like the dpns though.

I’ma die hard two-circ knitter – I do them one at a time but I always knit the second sock right after the first. No orphans yet!

I like both ways. I’d think some patterns are best for dpns and some are best for circs. Here’swhere I learned to do the two circ method.

I use two circs, and knit one sock at a time. I am interested in learning about the 2 socks at a time method, though! I just started a pair of socks last night. I learned with Cat Bordhi’s book. It was hard to get at first, but once I caught on, there was no turning back! The yarn I am using now is sooooo pretty- Mountain Colors bearfoot yarn, in all shades of purples. The pattern I am trying is called “columbine peak”, and it is in the book. :cheering:

I have that site bookmarked. Now I guess would be a good time to figure it out with everyone else out playing in the snow. I have another good quiet hour to go.

I am knitting my first pair of socks, one at a time, on 2 circulars, toe-up. An adventure!

Well I cast on #2 today (and that first row is always the hardest for me —DOH!) and used Nicolethegeek’s idea of one needle for the cast on stitches, and when you knit off it, you knit onto your dpn’s (she needs to explain this better hehehehe) and my second sock is working merrily along while I watch DVR’d Monk. No kids home tonight. Life is good!

I’m a Magic Loop girl. I would have voted for it if it had been a choice.

Well phooey it won’t let me add an option!

I got through almost all of my heel last night, am up to the turn - I forgot how quickly these go!

That’s OK. I still got to voice my opinion. By the way, I love Monk. Friday’s episode was hilarious. I love Laurie Metcalf. I just knew she would be great and she did not disappoint.
