Sock question-When picking up sts, if you have too many

I just turned the heel on my sock, and am to the point of picking up the stitches on the left side of the heel flap. I’m supposed to pick up 10 stitches, but to avoid a sizeable gap, I need to pick up 12. I know that some patterns tell you to pick up more than specified if needed. This is the first time I’ve needed to do it, though, and the patterns don’t go on to tell you what to do with the excess stitches afterwards. :??

Do I do a decrease somewhere to eliminate the extra stithces, and if so, how do I determine where to do it? I hope someone can help me.

That happens to me all the time–more stitches picked up than the pattern states. Just do extra decrease rounds–you’re aiming for the same number of stitches you had when you cast on. It won’t affect the fit of the sock at all. All is well!

Thanks loads, Angelia!

Onward sock knitting I go! :happydance:
