Happy Monday Everyone!
I’ve been knitting for about ten years - mostly fair isle sweaters and scarves. My big problem is socks! I’ve taken a class and have quite a few books (socks on two circulars - the little book shaped like a sock, etc), but I just can get my mind wrapped around the visualization and terms it takes to get through a pair. The sock I finished in the class is a bit scary, but I’d really like to have another go. I’m sure this topic has been tackled before so I’m really asking the best direction to a post, a book, a website - anything that anyone has found useful in knitting sock guidance.
Many thanks! Have a great week! :knitting:
Silver has a great tutorialto help you get started…and if you get stuck just ask…socks appear hard but really are pretty easy once you get the hang of them…just take it step by step and don’t worry about the other parts of the sock till you get there :happydance:
Also, watch on this site, Amy’s video for turning the heel of a sock. Until I watched that I was also really confused. But she reads the instructions as they are written and shows the flap, turn and gusset pick-up and decrease. Very helpful.
Ditto! Silver’s Tutorial is fantastic!! For whatever method you want to use. After that other patterns make much more sense and are easier to follow. Good luck. Once you get hooked socks won’t let you stop!!
I’m new to kintting and started socks early, with the help of the video & tutorial mentioned. They’re great!

Apparently, this is true. I’ve been knitting nearly two years. About 6 months into it, I was thinking, "Why in the world would you knit socks–you can buy them for a dollar at Wal-mart! (I know, I know!)
I watched a friend working on her first pair, and thought, “maybe I could do that.” It was about a year or so before I finally decided it to give it a go.
Now I’m halfway through my 4th sock—and I just violated my goal of using up a bunch of yarn from my stash, to order a bunch of sock yarn that should be here by the time I’m finished!![]()
I fought and fought with my first socks, trying to ‘visualize’ what was going to happen. Then I just relaxed and followed what the pattern said to do. Much easier.
Silver’s tutorial, as well as Amy’s are really helpful.
Good luck!
Dear Kazfam,
I could have written your post myself! I’ve battled my way through several pair of socks, but it definitely has not come naturally to me. I have that little book shaped like a sock too (Knit Socks!), and it has been very helpful. (By the way there is an error on the Off the Cuff sock. They omitted the leg part, as I recall. Not difficult to figure out the fix.) It’s such a cute book to have around, too.
I also purchased the DVD from societysocks.com and that was helpful too, in addition to the help I’ve gotten here by reading and viewing the great videos.

When I taught myself to knit socks, I just found KH and the videos. Very helpful and so I started to try socks. Oh what a mess I found the Pure and Simple sock patterns. They are very good and with those in hand the wise words of Ingrid “trust the pattern” and that is what I did. With in days I was making socks and haven’t look back:woot: Once you get past the heel and gusset you can knit any sock that is make as far as I am concerned.
Do try Silver’s sock tutorial they are great. With silvers and KH you can’t go wrong.![]()
