Sock help

I am knitting a simple top down sock. I am at the toe section. I was knitting on an airplane in bad light and lost my marker for the beginning of the round. How do I figure out where the beginning of the round is so I can start the decreases? Any help out there in knitters world? Thanks in advance

Oh no, that’s a little bit of a tricky one.

When this happened to me, I ran my needle down the column of stitches from the gusset decrease line to the toe and placed a marker on the right, then did the same on the left. Then I counted the stitches in between and adjusted left or right by eye to get an even number for the “top” and “bottom” of the toe.

That’s assuming you did a heel flap. If you did a short-row heel, then you would trace the columns from the corners of the heel.

It can be hard to trace down the columns exactly, but if you are out a stitch or two in either direction it shouldn’t matter. Most important is to get the same no. of stitches top and bottom.

Another way to do it would be to get a fine contrasting yarn and do a running stitch down the columns. Or, if you have plenty of locking stitch markers, use them every couple of rounds to mark the column. Or you could use two or three markers and leapfrog them.

Hope that helps. Other folks here will be along with their thoughts too, I’m sure.

If you’re doing top down, it’s the halfway point on the bottom of the sock… if you’re on dpns, (or even magic loop should work), lay your sock flat on it’s side. the bottom halfway point should show, if it’s a little twisted up or down, that’s how many stitches you’re past or have to go to the BOR…

Thanks - all done. Turned out perfect!
