Has anyone here made the SnB “To Dye For” sweater? I’m a beginning knitter (only been knitting about a year or so) but am tired of making scarves! The sweater looked easy enough from reading the pattern, but I’m concerned about the yarn (it’s a mohair blend). After doing some looking around on-line, I saw that mohair can be quite itchy, and so I don’t want to use it. If anybody has knitted this sweater, please help me and give me your thoughts on how difficult the pattern was, and also, if you substituted yarn, what kind you used. Thanks!
SnB "To Dye For" Sweater
I haven’t knit the sweater, but it was in the Knitpicks catalog, knit in Suri Dream. (You’ll notice it’s in the right sidebar as a recommended project) It’s hand wash only, but it’s soooo soft…very affordable too.
That sweater is mentioned here http://www.knitpicks.com/Projects/Projects_Display_Yarn.aspx?itemid=30449221&yarnid=5420130 using Suri Dream yarn. I have not used that particular yarn so I don’t know how itchy or soft it is.
I think earthchick was making that sweater, you might want to try sending her a private message.
I saw that yarn (Suri Dream) and wondered if it would make a good substitute…I was dying for an “excuse” to buy it, it looks so luxurious!!! Thanks everybody!
I ran out and bought some of Paton’s “Divine” yarn http://www.patonsyarns.com/product.php?LGC=divine
(76.5% acrylic, 10.5% wool, 10.5% mohair, and 2.5% polyester) and tried the gauge listed for the sweater, and it worked GREAT! I figured even if it didn’t work, I’ve spent $5.00 on dumber things, and I’m sure I coudl find something to do with the yarn! It has such a small amount of mohair in it I figured it might not be so itchy.
Lion Brand makes a mohair-look yarn that’s 100% acrylic called “Jiffy” that I’m thinking about doing a test swatch of too.
I’d really like to use all animal fibers in this sweater for myself…everything I have is man-made, and it would be such a treat to make myself something that is purely animal fibers, though part of me is leaning towards the “easy care” side of things that the acrylic yarns offer (washer and dryer and you’re done!).
Has anyone knitted this sweater in a cotton or linen type of yarn? I’m a little bit sad I didn’t think to try this sweater in the fall so I might have had it now, so I’m thinking if I knit it in “summer-friendly” yarn, maybe I could have it ready for summer.
one of my girlfriends made this sweater as her SECOND project. It’s very easy.
Suri Dream is GREAT! it is very warm (to me) but it COULD be kind of itchy if you have sensitive skin. DH’s cousin just started one with the Patons and it’s very very very very soft. She also finished one in Simply Soft? i think? It doesn’ thave the same airy look, though, but it’s soft.
If you’re thinking about using the Suri Dream, I would knit a little swatch and wear it next to your neck to make sure it doesn’t irritate you.
