Smaug from The Hobbit Pattern Help

Hi everyone,

I’ve gotten stuck in a couple different places in this pattern (http://www.instructables.com/id/Crochet-Dragon-Smaug-from-The-Hobbit/?ALLSTEPS), but most recently I have a question about the wings. I’ve tried directly commenting on the post, but the Instructables site is giving me problems with logging in and commenting.

In rows 11-12, the stitch count drops from 15 to 10 where I think there should only be one or two* dropped based on the instructions to sc. I’m frankly not surprised; I know there are other inconsistencies, and the creator said she made the pattern by creating the dragon and then retrospectively writing it down.

So, two questions: 1. Since I’m new to crochet and not yet good at telling which stitches are which from pictures, can anyone replicate rows 11-13 based on the pictures of the wings? If so, what stitches were used where and how many?
2. If the exact pattern is hard to see, can anyone visualize how to get a shape over the last five rows that’s generally similar to the pictures?
I’ve tried improvising, with slip stitches and turning chains in various places to make certain bits more or less curved, straight, or jagged, and I’m just not getting anything that looks similar to the pictures. I keep needing to frog everything back to row 10 where my stitch count and wing shape match the pattern’s.

*I think this is because there is no turning chain: you simply skip over the first stitch once you turn the wing around fro the next row.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

i contacted ChrysN, smaug’s designer on instructables, http://www.instructables.com/member/ChrysN/, and asked if they could answer your questions and get back to me on there or via my email, and i could pass it onto you. i’d have asked them to contact you directly, but your user name here doesn’t appear to be the same there, and there was no email address listed (good thing, with the spambots as they are)… anyway, if/when i hear, i’ll let you know. cheers

just got a reply:

Hi,
Thanks for letting me know about the mistake, I updated the pattern. In Row 12 it should begin with 4 sl sts, also there is a loss of one sc every time you turn without making a chain beforehand.
I hope that helps,
Chrysn

Thanks so much! I should’ve figured there was a way to message the designer directly instead of futzing with the comments, but I guess it wouldn’t have have made a difference since I still had trouble logging in in the first place.
Anyway, the 4 slip stitches sound exactly like what I was looking for.
