Slipping stitches

[B][COLOR=#800080]I am knitting a pair of socks http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cabletini-toe-up-socks[/COLOR][/B]
[B][COLOR=#800080]and the part i am having troubles with is the slip stitch…it says to p3, sl st as if to purl, knit 2.[/COLOR][/B]
[B][COLOR=#800080]Am i supposed to keep the yarn in the front, slip the stitch and then move the yarn to the back, OR am i supposed to move the yarn to the back first and then slip the stitch? thanks in advance! [/COLOR][/B]

If I am not mistaken, you are to slip the stitch by entering your right needle into the right hand side of the loop, as if you are going to do a purl stitch. This is one direction that used to make me scratch my head since I knit combined.

I usually slip the stitches and then move the yarn but that’s just me. Which row are you on? I couldn’t find the exact instructions.

I must be missing where it says that in the pattern. I’ve read it 3 times and can’t see it. What part are you at exactly? Is it part of the chart pattern or the heel?

I’m going to guess that it’s the pattern itself, in which case, I believe, you are reading the chart backwards. You work a chart from right to left (not left to right like when you are reading a sentence). So you would be doing a K2, slip one as if to purl (the yarn would be IN BACK), then bring the yarn forward and P3.

Maybe, I’m missing something, but that’s how I’d do it. Yarn in the back.

[B][COLOR=purple]You are right it is the chart…i should have specified that! I have to write out the directions for me to understand them because I have BAD eyesight and I mess up the pattern if I read from the chart! Also I read the CHART backwards! so when I wrote it…it was backwards! I was starting from the LEFT of the chart so now the slip as if to purl makes perfect sense! THANK YOU!!![/COLOR][/B]

You’re welcome.

I do that sometimes too - write out the chart. It makes it easier so you don’t have to keep looking at the legend for the chart on every stitch.

Those are cute socks, too. Might try them myself.

Slipping the stitch knitwise or purlwise only refers to how you insert the right needle into it; it has nothing to do with where the yarn is. Generally you would hold the yarn in back unless the pattern says otherwise.
